Lack of access to healthy food is a problem that impacts hundreds of families right here in Hartford. In fact, Hartford has a 21.9% food insecurity rate compared to a statewide rate of 11.9%. Hartford also as a poverty rate of 27.5% and an unemployment rate of 12%. In addition, many Hartford residents do not have access to healthy food or adequate knowledge of how to prepare it in a healthful way. Not surprisingly, according to recent data approximately 29% of Connecticut children between the ages of 5 and 17 are overweight or obese.
Nutrition Matters is a 10-week program focused on educating at-risk families about nutrition, making healthy choices and what we can collectively do to help close the hunger gap in our community.
Session topics will include healthy meal planning, understanding food labels, recognizing why we eat the way we eat, closing the hunger gap and much more. There will be cooking demonstrations where participants can sample easy recipes that are good for you and delicious!
The program will conclude with a group project where participants will choose a food system problem facing our community and work together to design an intervention to address that problem.
Sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm – September 21st – November 23rd
