The Louise Earle Loomis Children’s Wellness Center is a project six years in the making, from conception to grand opening, and is aimed at combating childhood obesity, particularly among underserved and minority children in Hartford. The Children’s Wellness Center has three interlocking components – obesity prevention, nutrition and healthy eating, and early childhood development. The Center is located at 57 Charter Oak Ave. in Hartford.

Programs of the Children’s Wellness Center will range from healthy cooking demonstrations to introductory sports classes, family game nights, gardening, baby yoga, arts, and music and dance programs along with a number of adult programs to ensure healthy development and identify developmental delays. Programs are open to the public and will be made available on the Family Life Education website (www.familylifeedu.org) as they become available.

Families are encouraged to take advantage of myriad of programs at the Children’s Wellness Center as well as become involved in other programs offered by Family Life Education. The mission of Family Life Education is to build a stronger community by fostering partnerships that engage families in a participatory process leading to self-efficacy. Currently, FLE serves 1,600 families each year and is in its 30th year of operations in the Parkville section of Hartford.

“The Children’s Wellness Center opening is the culmination of years of hard-work, program and curricula development and of course identifying the proper space, mission and goals of the center,” said Candida Flores, CEO of Family Life Education.

“This is a facility that has been supported by dozens of corporations, foundations, and hundreds of individuals who believed in our valuable mission,” Flores continued. “We cannot thank those who have believed in this project and supported our goals throughout this process.

Construction is slated to continue through the end of February, with finishing touches being put on through March. The Children’s Wellness Center grand opening is currently scheduled for April 26th and programs will begin this spring.
